Colorado Biolabs, Inc., the manufacturer of Proferrin® ES and Proferrin® Forte, was founded in 1997 with a plan to develop and market Proferrin – an oral iron supplement made from heme iron polypeptide (HIP). Our proprietary process results in an oral iron product that supports healthy iron levels by providing an optimal amount of HIP in a single tablet.
To help reduce the effects of iron deficiency by means of an oral iron supplement, Colorado Biolabs introduced Proferrin in 2001; it contained 7.5 mg of elemental iron as HIP. Proferrin ES was introduced later that year with 12 mg of elemental iron. It quickly became the preferred product. We introduced the oral iron supplement Proferrin Forte in 2003 when folic acid (1 mg) was added to the formulation.
The heme iron polypeptide (HIP) in Proferrin supports healthy iron levels in individuals prone to iron deficiency and delivers the iron in the naturally occurring heme molecule. Heme is manufactured in all mammals and is the key oxygen-carrying component in red blood cells. Heme is a major source of iron for humans, and is normally and naturally ingested by consuming meat and meat products.
The fact that HIP is a naturally occurring “food” gives it a significant advantage over other iron supplements, because as a food heme has superior absorption* characteristics that are not altered by taking the tablets with food.1
Support healthy iron levels with Proferrin oral iron supplements. Both Proferrin ES and Proferrin Forte are currently available in the United States. Proferrin is also available in Canada (11 mg of elemental iron per tablet).
