Increased Iron Absorption

Proferrin® products are made with our proprietary Heme Iron Polypeptide (HIP).  Heme Iron Polypeptide is a heme form of iron sourced from the hemoglobin found in bovine red blood cells.  HIP is clinically known to increase serum iron levels up to 23 times greater than ionic iron (study used ferrous fumarate).1

Heme is produced in all mammals and is the key oxygen-carrying component in red blood cells.  Heme Iron is found in both Hemoglobin (blood) and Myoglobin (red muscle).  Heme is a major source of iron for humans, and is normally and naturally ingested by consuming red meats, poultry and fish.  Heme Iron is a form of iron that comes bound to heme. Heme Iron provides far greater bioavailability, since it is absorbed more efficiently and in a different manner than ionic iron.2  All other iron supplements are made with varying forms of an ionic iron.

Absorption of Proferrin® products are not hindered when taken alongside common dietary constituents, such as coffee, tea, and whole grains. Many other forms of ionic iron supplementation recommend taking Vitamin C concurrently, in an effort to aid absorption.  Since Proferrin® products are heme based, it is not necessary to take Vitamin C to affect absorption.  Consumption of iron plus Vitamin C is known to be toxic to the gastrointestinal tract, we do not recommend that Vitamin C and iron be taken together.


Low Incidence of Side Effects

Proferrin® products are gentler in the digestive system, thanks to HIP, which is more easily absorbed than ionic iron.   Ionic iron supplements are poorly absorbed, and the remaining free iron in the gut commonly causes iron related digestive system side effects, like cramping and constipation.  Proferrin® products are less likely to cause iron related digestive system side effects.5


Does Not Compete With Other Nutrients

Proferrin® products are absorbed differently than ionic iron supplements, so it can be taken with or without food.  It’s your choice!

Proferrin® products do not need an acidic stomach to ensure maximum absorption.6  Ionic iron supplements require Vitamin C supplementation, which increases the risk of oxidative stress, a known risk factor in the development of ulcers.



Inflammation and the Hepcidin Response

Athletes need iron to support healthy oxygen transport and energy metabolism.  Hepcidin is the master regulator of iron absorption and availability.  Hepcidin is responsible for iron sequestration during inflammatory conditions, which limits ionic iron absorption. Heme Iron absorption is not significantly affected by Hepcidin concentrations.7



Fewer Dietary Restrictions

Some foods cannot be taken with iron supplementation, like coffee (tannins) or grains (phytates), because it will decrease the absorption of iron. Heme Iron is not affected by coffee (tannins) or grains (phytates).6  Ionic iron supplements (salts, chelates, polysaccharides, proteinates, etc.) require dietary restrictions or risk iron malabsorption.
